My teen or adult has already had "social skills," and still struggles! How is IRL different?

If you know me, you know that I’m honest, assertive and direct — and I have always wanted to talk about the “elephant in the room.” That means I want to talk about what people often don’t want to discuss.

In terms of social skills intervention, here’s what families hesitate to say:

“My child has already had ‘social skills,’ and nothing changed in real life.”

“They are still socially isolated and peer rejected. They still struggle with keeping friends (if they even have any). They are still bullied in school, despite how many times I complain to the principal and their teachers.”

“I’m worried about what is going to happen to them when I die, if they don’t have anyone whom they can rely on to have their back.”

“I’ve literally spent thousands of dollars on therapies, and we are still struggling with the social stuff. How will this be any different?”

  1. The methodology of the PEERS program uses the Socratic method of inquiry — the way in which our coaches ask questions gets the rules generated by the learners. People learn from their peers.

  2. The training of the parent/social coach helps the skills to generalize across communication contexts.

  3. Our coaches are experienced, savvy with navigating systems, and serve as excellent resources — both in and out of the weekly class.

  4. What you paid for in the past was not PEERS! It wasn’t evidence-based, it wasn’t strengths-based, it wasn’t informed by the #actuallyautistic community, and it wasn’t the intensive, wraparound support by provided by people who truly get autism and the social and sensory struggles.

Our program works, and now — almost a year since we launched — we hear from families about how their learner has implemented the skills they learned with us and now has an active social life. You want that for your learner. We want that, too!
